New Year, New Financial Resolutions

January 1 always feels like starting a new book that we get to write. The pages are blank, and we can start from scratch. That’s probably why we all make lifestyle and financial resolutions. Everything feels achievable in the new year.

In January, as your clients are joyfully diving into 2022, ask them if they’ve made financial resolutions to go along with their resolve to get more sleep, eat more vegetables, and begin composting. Whereas they may not have a coach to hold them accountable to the usual resolutions, your clients have YOU to help them see their financial resolutions through.

Financial Resolutions Are Relationship Builders 

If you’re like most advisors, you’d prefer to talk about more than just portfolio performance. It’s hard to build relationships based on a variable over which you don’t have control. But, when you dedicate time to cover myriad foundational issues (which are often the root of financial resolutions) with your clients, your relationship will blossom. 

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel, though. The “What Issues Should I Consider At The Start Of The Year?” checklist addresses foundational issues. You can leverage it to engage your clients and coach them toward meaningful financial improvements. Rest assured, the checklist will spark conversations about:

  • Personal issues
  • Cash flow issues
  • Asset and debt issues
  • Tax issues
  • Insurance issues
  • Legal issues 

As the new year gets underway, take your place as your clients’ financial coach and advisor. In the end, when you engage beyond the portfolios, you’ll lead your clients to make positive changes that actualize their financial resolutions. It’s a pretty great way to start the year!
